More about this scene

Lord George Cavendish rebuilt the house in 1840 to a design by the then Earl of Burlington, later Duke of Devonshire; this design closely resembled the original building. A fire in 1871 destroyed the west wing with all its valuable pictures, books, and furnishings. The fragments of a marble pedestal were collected and later incorporated into the chimney-piece we can see on the left of this view of the Hall.
