Memories Of Living At The Camp (Dobles Square)

A Memory of Holsworthy.

Living at the "camp" Dobles Square in the late 40s and early 50s. Our family Smith lived here with many others. It was temporary housing for families after the war. It was a wonderful time for everyone. I have many happy memories. I remember my first day at school at the Drill Hall. We were there before moving to the main school down the road. I would love to see some photos if anyone has any of this period. Mrs Petherick was my favourite teacher and I stayed in touch with her for many years. The other strong memory is that of the carnival with all the flaming torches and how the floats would gather in the square outside our tin houses. Jeannie Cole (Smith) my proper name is Georgina but have always be known mostly as Jeannie.

Hi Jeannie or Georgina, I lived at the Square in the concrete huts I think it was about 1952/3 when we moved in from Thornbury. I went to the Church junior school on the main road outside the entrance to the park. I can't remember the drill hall school (maybe you are slightly older that me lol ) My main teacher was Mrs Squance but I remember the name Mrs Petherick. I have my very first school class photo but can't put names to all those there. I also remember the carnival and did carry one of the torches in later years. I hope that we can stay in touch as I have very happy memories of my childhood there. There don't seem to be many on FB from that area. By the way my name is David Hards there wasn't any one else called Hards except my sister Veronica. I left Holsworthy in 1963 to join the Army and am now retired in Bangor Northern Ireland.
I lived in 8 Doubles Square, I had a happy time there. The roof used to leak and the windows had thin metal frames. Often we would wake up to find our shoes and boots were full of water. Our next door neighbours were the Fursdons.
I also went to Holsworthy Primary School.I especially remember Miss Piper ( Mini Piper) she drove a Morris Minor. I was in the choir and Mr Pulsford, who was the Headmaster, used to conduct, rub his hands together and shout "Articulate!" I had a very happy time at the Primary School and loved the nature trips, down the hill catching little fish in the stream, picking various grasses and taking leaves back to learn which trees they were from. Although I loved the Primary School, I hated my time at the secondary School, which were some of the worst days of my lifel!! The name Martindale, still gives me the jitters. Jill Whapham
