Underneath this main road flows a stream that rises from a spring under the church of the Holy Rood, built in the 12th century. The village takes its name from this stream that joins the River Wey at Neatham. Perhaps the couple pushing the pram on the right are making their way home for a warm cup of tea - the lady's attire suggests that it is cold.
