Living In Hopton On Sea

A Memory of Hopton on Sea.

My memory was triggered by the person writing about the Constitutional Camp's hall/ballroom building being burnt down. At the time I was attending the Primary School in the village and we could see the smoke and flames from our classroom. Our lovely Head teacher Mr Etheridge allowed us all to go onto the playing field and watch as the fire engines rushed through the village to attend the fire. I think he realised he wasn't going to get any work out of us!!
I was also a 'luggage carter' - the children in the village earned their pocket money every Saturday by using a Barrow to carry holiday maker's luggage from either the Train or Coaches/Buses (people were dropped off on the old A12, which was quite a walk from there to the intended holiday camp.) We all hated it when someone was going to White Clover holiday camp as it was on the end of the village and up a long hill!
The Golden Sands camp allowed the village children to use their swimming pool every summer, there was always a queue at the beginning of the season to get our passes.
I enjoyed my childhood in Hopton very much, everyone knew everyone!
