Hornsea Children’s Convalescence Home

A Memory of Hornsea.

I was sent to this place in the late 1950’s. I don’t know why I was sent but I remember having two separate visits of one month. I was only 4 or 5 when I went, but I don’t have many good memories of my time there. I can remember going round the back of the bus depot picking raspberries and going to the beach but that was about all for the good times.
I can remember my dad and grandmother coming to visit and bringing sweets and some toys, but after they left everything was taken away and “shared” with everyone. I never saw the toys again. I remember the regime was strict, especially at bath times. I do remember being given somebody’s clothes after bath night and being scolded by the staff because I wanted my clothes back and being sent to the room at the rear, which I think was a store cupboard.
My first stay was in the front dormitory on the first floor, because I remember watching my father walking down the hill to the railway station, and again being shouted at. My second visit, I think, was in a bedroom on the ground floor at the rear behind the staircase, which ascended left to right, and next the bathroom.
Not a great experience, but being so young I think I’m lucky in either not remembering everything, or, blanking out the memories.
I hope that you all have peace and solace after this “home”
This must have been bad for it to be raised by the local MP and being reported in Hansards.
