A Memory of Hornsea.

this place held a lot of bad memories for me, I was sent 3 times in the 60s a lot of cruelty , especially once you left the nursery and was old enough to be on the dormitory up the flight of stairs.
the nurse would come and shine a torch in your face, if you moved and were awake she would drag you off the bed and had to stand on the landing in the cold. the childrens crying was horrendous, I was petrified and tried to keep my eyes shut and keep still.
I remember there was a room where we all went to sing songs and say nursery rhymes, we was given mail as well. mine had a postal order in from my grandmother. it was snatched out of my hands and kept.
I was too shy to sing songs or recite rhymes, I was sent to bed early afternoon.
I had my sister come the second time. I was allowed a sibling to come with me, she was stood on a table and slapped hard across the back of the legs. we were a poor family. she wore a nighty given to her from a relative ,they said was too revealing was more for a lady. she was 12 years old. we couldn't afford night wear, we wore our fathers old t-shirts.
at meal times you had to eat everything on your plate, if you didn't you were not allowed any sweets out of your oxo tin. and those that was forced to eat and were sick was made to eat there own vomit,

many years later mum showed me the Yorkshire evening post , a picture of a woman , mum asked if I recognised her , I did , June Artle matron of the convalescent home. in the news for ill treatment of children.
she was a horrible woman, Harsh to a lot of children. I do remember some nice nurses. thank god for them .
Hopefully the truth will come out one day.
