Walking To School
A Memory of Houghton-Le-Spring.
During a visit to Andersons Optician in Houghton-le-Spring, I was fascinated to see a full wall mural of this photograph. As I waited at the desk, I realised that the two little girls walking past the bank looked like my friend and I walking to the old junior school at the end of Newbottle Street.
I'm the one with the little short legs, round face and very blonde hair. I proudly carried a brown leather satchel. My friend was older than me and responsible for escorting me safely from Dixon Road, which was quite a trek for those little legs!
On the way home, we called at Wheatleys sweet shop, where I was allowed to spend 1p to buy sweets for me AND my brother!
I am 62 now and the little girl in the photograph looks exactly the right age. It also looks like other children are walking to school, so maybe this could actually be me. Amazing.
