Hounslow .. Tin Town .. Cranford And Budding Stars!
A Memory of Hounslow.
Hi,
My Nan and Granfer, along with my aunties lived on Cedar Rd on what many called 'tin town' near Hounslow West and Cranford.
Cecil and Peggy Costa, the then Carol Costa (Mum) Auntie Julie, Auntie Lee and twins Gill and Pam.
Gill and Pam survive and thrive still. They have both carved out beautiful families and continue to enjoy life.
Mum (Carol) passed away in 2018 as A consequence of acquired lung problems, as as result of the smoking that MOST did until recent years.
I miss her.
My memories of that estate were the little shops and playing football by the swings or on the other green, closer to the shops. Janet Turner, who I went to school with lived on that green! (Wonder where she is now!?)
I was that manic little boy, who never ran out of mischievous energy, undoubtedly via having ADHD back then, which through not being A 'known condition' led to bouts of mischief and regular 'caning' and 'slippering' at school, cause the teachers knew no better.
Those days back then were wonderful and the people I got to know will always remain in my grateful memory, despite the brain aneurysm, 2 month coma, 8 months in hospital and the initial loss of my memory entirely after my 3 brain surgeries.
It's my belief that following those bleak years of WW2, that some of the best people ever, resulted from those terrible days of 'war', with many families finding thier way to 'tin town' !
My 'best friends' back then were Robert Hinxman, Ian West (Who's Mum Jean owned Green Lane Stables, and Peter King (Who like me, was full of mischief.. probably because of the same undiagnosed ADHD..!)
I wonder where they all are now?
For those of you who might read this .. Did you know that the then young Cliff Richard and the Shadows, used to practice in the tiny lounge of no 3 Cedar Rd !!! (TRUE!)
(From small practice sessions can come great careers!!)
Anyone who remembers any of my family and that 'fantastic time' back then .. I say hello and wish you all well !
Where the time gone eh!!?
Happy life and times to you all !
Terry Slade.
