Memories Of My Childhood In Huntingdon
A Memory of Huntingdon.
I was born at 18 Primrose Lane in 1944.
We then moved to Priory Road and then onto Brookside long before the ring road was built.
I remember when The Grand cinema caught fire in the middle of the night and hearing the old air raid siren signalling the fire engines.
The fun we had at the youth club in the prefab building adjacent to the Secondary Modern School in Brookside.
The carefree school holidays when we played at Toby's trunk skated on the ice in winter.
Gone all day across the commons during the summer only going home for dinner.
Wiles sweet shop next to the Hippodrome cinema in the High Street.
Parties at the Methodist Church.
Miss Scott the headmistress at the Primary School I was terrified of her. Next door was a nursery where the little ones would lie on canvas beds covered with army blankets in the warm weather.
Teachers Miss Mills and Mr Hardy.
I like many others loved living in Huntingdon sadly we moved to Cambridge in 1958.
I missed the place and my friends terribly.
My name was Rhona Stevens

No, I'm not someone you would know but my wife could be. She was Jacqueline Love, living at 22 Avenue Road. A year older than you she also went to the Methodist Church - we married there in 1964. She too was at Miss Scott's school and attended a reunion in 2005 of pupils who left there in 1955. I worked at Osman's and also knew Miss Scott through providing the public address system for the sports days.
If you knew Jackie I'm sure she'd be happy to share a few memories. We've lived in Bournemouth since 1983.
Thank you for contacting me.
I remember Jacqueline I can't quite remember her face after all these years!
Not surprising I suppose.
Lana Arnold lived in Avenue Rd and Sheila Skeels around the corner.
We had some really lovely times in Huntingdon it would seem that many of us took off to other parts, what a lovely place you are living in so very lucky.
Please tell Jacqueline to have a look at the huntingdonccan.co.uk website there are some really interesting pictures of old Huntingdon and also articles on the Methodist Church. I remember Rev Short and Alf Holland.
I don't suppose there are many true old Huntingdonians left there now.
The place certainly has changed.
I regularly speak with Lesley (Green) she is a very old friend of mine.
Thank you again for contacting me and my very kind regards to Jaqueline and hope she is keeping well.
I'm Charles Girdwood (known as Chas now) and lived in Priory Road. We knew each other quite well in those days. How nice to come across you again and, of course, I remember the things you have mentioned being at the Primary School and a member of the Methodist Church. I too went to the School reunion in 2005.
I moved to Cambridge when I was 19 because I was working at Pye in Cambridge, then went to EMI in Hayes at the start of colour television. I then worked for ITV in the IBA and moved to Winchester where I now live.
I'd love to here from you: ckg@girdwood.co.uk
I am Chas Girdwood and Jackie will know me as Charles as we grew up together and went to the Primary School. I was at your wedding and we met again at the HCPS reunion in 2005. Since then I had a computer disc failure and lost all my contacts. I now live in Winchester and can be contacted on ckg@girdwood.co.uk
