More about this scene

This similar view of the village gives a closer impression of the mission house and the row of managers' houses (right). Number 20 Hutton Village, the house on the left-hand end of the terrace, was extended during the early years of the 20th century and almost doubled in size. Between the road leading up to the mission house and the track forking off to the left of it, lies the village green, very much the heart of the village and a place where generations of village children have played, and continue to enjoy many happy hours. For many years the green was dominated by a large tree with a low branch which many generations of village children had fun sitting upon. Some of the sapling trees and conifers shown on the green in this view still stand today. The mission house remained a place of worship well into the 20th century; it was under the pastoral care of the rector of Guisborough, and he or one of his curates came up to the village to hold services there. The author's grandmother was a Sunday School teacher at the mission house in the 1930s, 40s and 50s; she lived in one of the cottages in the village, and here the author's mother was born and brought up.
