More about this scene
A fascinating history lies behind Ardenlea, high up on Queen's Drive. The house, which has splendid views over the town and valley towards Middleton, was built as a family home in 1881 for Mr and Mrs George Thorpe. Just before the First World War, it was taken over by the North Eastern Railway Company as a convalescent home for railway workers, not only from the NER but all the other great companies. The official opening was held on 8th May 1915 and it served the industry well until closure in 1963, when it was purchased by the Marie Curie Foundation. This organisation is about to move to new premises in Bradford and a new chapter is soon to be written about this magnificent house and grounds.
