More about this scene

Downstream from the old bridge, the Wharfe takes on a gentle benign feel. Here pleasure boats can be hired in the summer months. The landing stage has been in use for over a hundred years and, together with the cafe and children's amusements, draws visitors year after year to this pastoral part of town. The Riverside Gardens retained their popularity with day visitors as increasing affluence enabled more families to use personal transport for recreation. In the later view (I6501), smart cars line up at the same time as the Beeching axe is being sharpened. On many smaller railway lines, the decline in custom throughout the 1950s and 60s made eventual closure inevitable.

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Joan lived and worked in Bradford as a worsted spinner. I'm asking for help as through DNA matching she is somewhere related to my husbands fathers side of ...see more
I moved to Ben Rhydding at a year old and grew up there with my brother and sister. We loved living there, exploring the river and the moors. I distinctly remember the large detached house Thornycroft when it was still owned by a wealthy family. I visited them frequently to walk their two dogs, Puffin and Brandy. They still had their croquet lawn, a very large, exotic greenhouse and the old servants' quarters. We ...see more
I also was born there in April 1943. I have memories of my father telling me of him walking along a canal bank so he could visit my mother, when he was on leave! Would like to know exactly where it was siituated, so I could visit the area. Always tell my family I was born on Ilkey moors!
