More about this scene
St Martin's cross is the best and most famous of the freestanding high Celtic crosses that survive on Iona. It dates from the 8th century. It is over 17 feet high, and is beautifully carved with biblical scenes on one side and on the other the 'boss and serpent' design associated with pre-Christian pagan worship.
