Jaywick, The Sands c.1955

More about this scene
The fields that became Jaywick were originally sold after the agricultural depression of the late 1920s. The land was divided into plots, and wooden chalets erected on them. The town was cheery enough in holiday weather, but winter could bring disasters. In 1953 the sea had smashed a thirty-yard gap in the concrete sea wall. This resulted in the town flooding, leaving 35 people dead.
