More about this scene
Kelham Hall was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott to replace an earlier structure destroyed by fire in the late 1850s. It was at the original hall that King Charles I is said to have finally surrendered to the Scots in 1645. The King's arrival at Newark had taken the Scots by surprise, but they immediately sounded Parliament out with a view to eventually selling his majesty to the English.
