Nostalgic memories of Kenton's local history

Share your own memories of Kenton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

A view of Kenton Road to the west of the railway bridge. To the immediate left of this shot behind the Shell petrol pump (now a car park) is Churchill Hall, home of the Wembley North Conservative Club. Rather more interestingly, in the early '60s the hall hosted the New Fender Club. It was a popular R&B music venue of the day with appearances by such bands as The Who, The Yardbirds and The Graham Bond ...see more
I think that this is a photo of the (then) newly built John Perrin Place flats. This unremarkable construction was built on the site of the centuries old Lyon's Farm, which was torn down for the purpose. The farm was once the property of John Lyon of Preston, the yeoman farmer and landowner who founded Harrow School (originally intended as a place of learning for the poor of the parish.) Who John Perrin was, I have absolutely no idea. Probably some puffed up local councillor.
It was my fathers local-he was the master of a lightship and spent 4 weeks on & 2 weeks ashore-he made the most of those 2 weeks! I used to sit outside quite regularly with an orange squash whilst he finished his game of dominoes. I remember one morning, on my way to school going past the car park at the rear, the publicans Alsatian dog took a big bite of my leg. He'd had a crack at the Postman too. I ...see more
I lived in Kenton Lane between 1956 - 62, when we left & emigrated to NZ. I don't have a lot of memories, unfortunately I wish I had, but I am sure I went to Priestmead School . I have never forgotten my best friend, Denise Mould - I tried to find her for years but no luck. So if anyone knows what happened to her, I would love to know. She lived at 17 Alecia Avenue, Kenton; her mum was Lil and her dad, George, she had a sister Carol. If anyone can help it would be so good.
From 1952-1963 my family lived on Kenton Rd. in a house backing onto the Kenton Tennis Club (now Rufford Close). I was five in 1956. Memories of sunny Sunday afternoons in the back garden with the soundtrack of good-natured tennis matches; memories of the mid-1950's snows with JH Brazier milk-floats and the rag-and-bone cart struggling through. (Horse manure was collected on Kenton Road by eager gardeners when I was a ...see more
I remember many enjoyable Friday evenings at 'The Plough' on the corner of Gooseacre Lane (usually with too much beer!) and the following visits to the 'Blue Gems' in Kenton Road for some Chinese food at pub closing time. The restaurant was renamed as 'Chu-Chin-Chow' around 1963/4. There was a waiter there who bore a striking resemblance to a wrestler called Leon Fortuna who appeared on TV when Kent ...see more
I was born in Elmgrove Crescent Harrow in 1933 and lived in Pinner Road North Harrow, moving to Wealdstone in 1934. I started at Bridge Scool in 1938 and followed on to Belmont Sec. Modern School until leaving in August 1948 and started training as an electrician with Northmet Electricity at 4 College Road Harrow. I was attached to the Kenton branch showrooms and depot in Kenton Road, ...see more
