More about this scene
This junction of Newland Street with Gold Street, Silver Street and Montagu Street was sometimes busy enough to have policemen on point duty. By the post-war period traffic had increased, so traffic lights were installed (see K13018, pages 52). The KICS (Co-op) drapery building with Jacobean bay windows can be seen down Newland Street. Ernest Woodcock, on the right, extended down Montagu Street and was described as Kettering’s leading department store for fashions, fabrics, furnishings, furniture and household linen. They were also funeral directors.
