Kilby 1960s

A Memory of Kilby.

I lived at 9 Main Street, Kilby from about the age of 2 (1964) until 1968-9, when it was converted from 2 small houses to our 4 bed house, and have fond memory's of ...
The school across the road, attending for the first time, my sister being may queen attendant to Ruth (?) the may queen.
Flooding and with from the bottom of the road and the water reaching our house, coming in through the front door. The farmer delivering soup on his tractir to the old lady who lived at the bottom of the road who had to move to the upstairs of her house because of the flood.
Harvest festival at the church, walking through the fields near the church to go fishing in the river beyond with my dad.
The farm next door to our house, visiting the cow sheds, the pigs and the barn fire which I watched out of our spare bedroom window! Playing in the stream at the bottom of the gardn with children from the farm.
The sweatshop and post office at the top of the street opposite the pub
Watching the boxing day hunt as they left the hall
I could go on... I think memories often paint a rosier picture but I recall it being wonderful and i often still think of it.

Comments & Feedback

Hi, I lived at 1 Main Street from 1969 until 1986. I bet the May Queen was Ruth Stevens. She lived at one of the farms in the middle of the village. We played in the stream too! And I remember our house flooding, turned out next door was slightly lower than us so they ended up with deeper water than we did.I think it was easier growing up in the 60's & 70's than it is now especially living in a village.
