Kingsbridge Secondary School

A Memory of Kingsbridge.

I was in 1935 and in the early 1950's lived in Thurlestone. I initially attended the Thurlestone Primary School but after sitting the 11 plus exam and failing I went to Kingsbridge Secondary School (it was called Kingsbridge Modern Secondary School in those days). I travelled on the School bus driven by Bill Wellington who picked us up every school day at Thurlestone and took us home in the afternoon. The school was brilliant and had very good teachers. The Headmaster was Mr Coombe and he ran a very strict school (I know because I was marched in to see him on a few occasions). I progressed well at the school and it prepared me for a long and eventful life. After School I completed a Dental Technicians course at Exeter University but I found this boring and so went to Southern Rhodesia where I joined the British South Africa Police. I returned to England in 1964 with my wife and three children and served time in the Devon Constabulary before emigrating to Australia in 1968 where with our now four children we settled and led a very successful life. I am now retired and living in Milang in South Australia. I owe my success to the excellent education I received at Kingsbridge and rather belated would like to thank all my teachers.
