Kingsbury In The 1950's

A Memory of Kingsbury.

Dear John. I too was born in Kingsbury at the Honey Pot Lane Maternity Annex in 1953. We lived opposite Brampton Road in the flats on the High Road. My uncle and aunt lived at 1 Brampton Road this being a house tied to his job with Eastern Electricity whilst my auntie worked on the caravan sales site at the swimming pool end of the High Road. To this day I remember our flat number; 463B. It was the top floor flat above the Gents outfitters called Edgar Hawes. The UD dairy shop was next door. Access to the flats was via the small roadway used for deliveries especially to Woolworths one way and Sainsbury's the other. I too went to Roe Green primary. I still remember my first teacher (as I'm sure lots do) a Mrs Barnstaple. Margaret Gerrie who replied to your post mentioned the Woolworth's bomb site. I was told at the time that it arose out of a flying V1 bomb. When I was five we had a man call at our flat and "carefully remove" from the tank in the kitchen parts of that bomb. I recall to this day him gingerly handling the bomb and taking it downstairs to be diffused. I told everyone at school. Later on in life once working I realised he'd been a plumber and my "bomb" was the ball cock from the water tank ! Yes I went to the same sweet shop , ate the same sweets 3d bought and paid 6d for the Saturday morning pictures. I was most possibly the kid sitting behind you throwing things at the screen and stamping my feet furiously like everyone else whilst the projectionist slowly changed films. Remember this?
