Curved Windows Of Bentalls

A Memory of Kingston Upon Thames.

I remember being fascinated by these as a child in the 60's - was like the hall of mirrors at a funfair as they distorted your reflection!

There used to be an intriguing facade of an old vicarage built into the side of Bentalls, this was unfortunately lost when the place was structurally altered to make a shopping mall. I assume being a facade it wasn't under same protection as a complete building. I remember the statue of Mr Bentall being outside in a niche on the wall and when worked there we had an employees entrance out the back on ?Dolphin street. Across the way were old timbered houses too, one with one of those lead sun signs for fire insurance. They disappeared when ?John Lewis car park was built.

I can just remember going to Bentalls as a very small child :for a haircut. There were chairs in animal shapes, as on a Roundabout . We were twirled around on the base till we were at the right height for the hairdresser. this was in the 1930s.
