Fa Cup Final 1971

A Memory of Kingston Upon Thames.

Bentalls was a big shop, especially if like me you'd grown up in small villages & army bases. I can remember seeing a bespoke luxury car being parked between the escalators.
Not having a TV at my aunts house in Raynes Park, where we were living for a few years, Cup Final day would see me catching buses to Kingston. That was, I think, the only day they would have the volume turned up on the demo sets in store. Must have watched 2 or 3 finals there, but 1971 is the one I remember. Arsenal needed to beat Liverpool to do the Double of winning the League & FA Cup. It was a blazing hot day, & even in store I drank a lot of the free cups of iced water provided for the customers. Although I was not an Arsenal fan, the flamboyant Charlie George, who scored the winner, was a bit of a hero, & being a goalkeeper Bob Wilson was as well.

Comments & Feedback

Having done some research, I think the luxury car I mentioned came from a later year than the 1971 mentioned. It was, I believe, a Panther De Ville, which was not made until 1974. As I lived in London on & off between 1970-75, that would fit.
