Lacock, The High Street c.1955

More about this scene
Miss Matilda Talbot donated Lacock Abbey, together with most of the village, Manor Farm and Bewley Common, to the National Trust between 1944 and 1946. The lack of TV aerials, white lines, overhead cables and red pillar boxes have made it an ideal location for filming period dramas. The High Street was transformed by the BBC in October 1994 into Meryton, the fictional village in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The red brick exterior of the Red Lion, far right, built about 1740, became the Assembly Rooms where Elizabeth and Darcy danced.
