More about this scene

We are entering the village from Flimwell. On the right, note the people waiting for a bus next to the Village Hall, built in 1921. The Chequers pub leads to the bridge over the river Teise; beyond that is the George and Dragon pub, which was rebuilt in 1882 after a fire destroyed the old inn. On the left is Avard and Coís garage; note the different companiesí petrol pumps and the AA sign.

Jogging The Memory
Have only just read Mike Beeches memories( where have I been?) My Great Grandfather Stephen Russell lived in the village at Park Gate Cottages, although he was more likely to found in the Horse & Groom! He died in 1968. My mother was born there, and never knew her her father was - just a few days ago having taken an Ancestry DNA test, I now know - unfortunately she died in 2007 and will never know. My ...see more

Victoria Stores
My great grandfather owned the Victoria stores and my only memory is going to see his grave as a small child. Sadly I couldn't tell which church it was. His Name was George Shrewsbury Reeve.

Philip Alan Simpson
This is not my memory but that of my sister in law's. Her paternal grandfather, Philip Alan Simpson, was the Head Brewer at Stair House for several years up to and including 1901.

Stair House
I was 2 years old when my family moved to Stair House. My father was Ted Miller and was contracted by the government to collect scrap metal during the war years. We moved in 1948 but I have strong memories of the village. What sweets were available from Mrs Fuller-Waters shop, the first haircut at the barber's, going up the hill, the golf course with a small stream running at the back of Stair House, and ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
