More about this scene
Lancaster developed on the east slopes of the castle and church. This area was once called Kirk Lancastre. All the buildings of early and medieval Lancaster were in the area in front of the castle gateway. This left the area behind the castle free for development, and open spaces and industrial buildings appeared in the mid Victorian period. Our photograph was taken from Giant Axe Field; the area behind the photographer, known as Marsh, had at the time been developed as a linoleum and oilskin manufacturing plant.
