More about this scene
Since 1923, this magnificent building has housed the city's fascinating museum, but it opened in 1783 as the corn exchange. The array above the annexe beside the old Town Hall belongs to the telephone exchange, which moved there in 1888. Begun in 1885 with just three lines, the service expanded rapidly, and by 1893, 184 subscribers were generating almost 3,900 calls every week.
