Coalville Grammar School

A Memory of Ledbury.

I went to the grammar school in 1960 I think. It was the last year that it occupied the old building in Coalville, a beautiful building unfortunately already too small to accomodate all pupils. The first year were sent to an old school in Griffydam and the second year to an old school in Whitwick. I was pleased to go to the new school up towards the Oaks when that opened for my second year.
I lived in GraceDieu but it was many years before i found and was brave enough to use the shortcut through Whitwick quarry. Usually i caught a bus either walking through the woods to the main road near Grace Dieu Manor or by bicycle to Thringstone (leaving my bike behind the coop. I enjoyed my years there with Mr 'Dracula' Foster maths and our form teacher for a few years who bought dried blood to feed his tomatoes. Mr Taylor who taught English and only relied on future coming to pass In SH' ALLAH, a legacy of army service in Arabia Iassume. My favourite was Mr Brunskill who had an unsightly skin problem, a tendency to nod off, but made history alive for me. My other memories of the area were my various casual jobs. Collecting the money on the family milk round in Thringstone amd Whitwick. Paper rounds before school and later working as a weekend cashier at Fine Fare when they opened, where incidentally Imet my husband over 50years ago.
Carol Hoult was my name in those days
