Caption for Leeds, Roundhay Park Boat Station 1897: In 1891 the first experiments in England using overhead wiring for electric trams took place on the Roundhay Park route. There were problems caused by the tramway using an earth return for the traction current, and so the line opened using steam tram engines. The electrified route between Kirkstall and Roundhay opened in August 1897.

Does anyone remember Hart's Department Store which used to be next to Matthias Robinsons? I remember going to Leeds from Ilkley on many Saturday afternoons - pre-war - the car was parked behind Lewis's!
