Leicester, Charles Street c.1950

More about this scene
A swish, up-to-the-minute dual carriageway was created to relieve the pressure of excessive traffic in 1931 by widen- ing and extending a street which, until that time, ran only between Humberstone Gate and Rutland Street. On the left of the photograph are survivors of the late 19th/ early 20th century looking across to poorly designed buildings of the 1930s. Charles Street has never developed as a shopping street, having always been a rather sad throughway.
