More about this scene

Rising up Lancaster Road, away from the prison, the vista through to the City's War Memorial is broken by this magnificent set of wrought iron gates interspaced by stone piers crowned by vases. Dating from 1923, the gates and fixed railings comprise elaborate examples of the ironworkers' art in an 18th-century style. Beyond the gates and extending to the Memorial are formal flower gardens, shrubs and trees. On the London Road axis, gate lodges designed by Lutyens in the early 1930s mark the opening of a second vista to the memorial.
