Hither Green

A Memory of Lewisham.

I lived in Theodore Road and I was one of 11 children. the only vehicle in our road was a motorbike and sidecar. I can remember Cutlers hardware shop. On Hither Green Lane as well as the fish and chip shop I can't remember the owners name. We had a Spar shop on the corner where we could buy broken biscuits. Our doctor was Dr Clark we didn't need to make an appointment back then. I too can remember playing hide and seek in the bushes in Mountfield Park as well as enjoying putting golf. We Also enjoyed playing snooker at the snooker hall at the end of Courthill Road and above Burtons near Lewisham clock tower. I used to enjoy swimming at the old Ladywell Baths. I've lived in the north since 1968. When I do visit Lewisham it seems so much different now. But I'll always have a those happy childhood memories.

I remember the area well, I lived in Davenport Rd, went to St Mary’s ce school , then Hither Green Sec Boys, Beacon Rd., left school 1956. Great times playing in Mountsfield park, Ladywell Rec & bombed shops. Livestock Corner was a fun place, lots of pups, kittens, even pigs & a sheep in the back. Later on drinking in The George pub{now gone} Chris Hawkins owner. Davenport Youth club. Good mates to muck around with, Jim Blackledge, Nobby Knowels, Johnny Killick, then a bit later. Roger Spearings Jazzmen, Chiselhurst Caves, Ken Colyers jazzmen at The 51 club. Happy Days lots more to ramble on about later Dave Allen.
