Leyburn, Market Place 1889

More about this scene
Leyburn developed into a market town thanks to a charter granted by Charles I, but unlike Hawes and Askrigg, it never became industrialised. It proved to be a popular retirement place for Yorkshire business people, and the population doubled during the early years of Victoria's reign. In the 1890s the market rights were still owned by Lord Bolton, the charter having been granted by Charles I. Originally markets were held on a Tuesday, but this was changed to Fridays in 1696.
