The arrival of the railway one mile away, sealed the fate of West Liss. A new village was born around the railway station and with it a new church, St Mary's, built in 1892 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. Over the years this new church has led to the gradual demise of St Peter's, West Liss. Its future is now unsure.

This has been the Spread Eagle Pub for a long time. The road off to the left leads to Hawkley, the main road leads to the Ham Barn roundabout on the A3 London-Portsmouth, through West Liss with Liss behind the photographer.
I remember nothing of the school except the day a German plane flew low over the playground. The teachers quickly got us under cover but I could see my mother standing out in a field in a yellow rain hat. I did not know at the time that my father had seen the plane coming in low to strafe us and had run to an anti-aircraft gun (a bren gun?) in a vain attempt to shoot it down. He was at Longmoor Camp.
