More about this scene
Littleport is distinguished as being the last place on which the Bishop of Ely exercised his temporal powers. In 1816, local farm workers, enraged at being made unemployed as a result of the enclosure of common land, marched to Ely and caused a disturbance. The Bishop called in the army, and appointed judges to make an example of the rioters. Five were hanged, and many others were transported.
