By 1965 most of the boats on the Broads were motorised. The lifebelt on the left of the picture is a reminder that each year the Broads claim lives. Not only do currents sweep under the boats, but there is a great danger of becoming entangled with weeds below the surface. Hire boat companies now issue life jackets as a matter of course.
