The flagpole is not flying the Royal Standard, indicating that the Queen was away on this spring day. The Victoria Memorial was still a roundabout, which easily accomodated the light traffic. There are 600 rooms in the Palace, but the Queen and her then larger family occupied only around a dozen at the side.
