More about this scene
Opposite Gray’s Inn Road is Staple Inn. It was once the meeting place for wool merchants with a custom house where wool dues were collected. Originally the exclusive province of lawyers, in later years many celebrated figures took rooms in the building, including Dr Johnson, who wrote ‘Rasselas’ here to help defray his mother’s funeral expenses.
