More about this scene
Only a century and a half ago Hyde Park was bordered by mire and wilderness. Londoners tended market gardens close by which are now smothered by the buildings of Kensington. In the 18th century it was considered foolhardy to venture here after dark. Travellers joined forces to ward off the attentions of highwaymen.
