The arch of this impressive monument was originally crowned by Wyatt’s colossal equestrian statue of the England’s military darling, the Iron Duke. In the 1880s, when the French wars were long forgotten, it was moved to Aldershot and replaced by the dramatic bronze by Adrian Jones, an allegorical rendering of Peace dropping out of the heavens onto the chariot of war.
