London, Piccadilly Circus c.1895

More about this scene
Dominating this view is the classical portico of the London Pavilion, one wing of which was occupied by the Piccadilly Restaurant. Here the well-heeled flocked to dine. It is hard to believe that this elegant corner of the West End is now smothered with giant neon advertisements. Opposite is the Criterion Restaurant, 'in whose spacious saloons one may rub shoulders with the representatives of every civilised nation'.
