More about this scene
This panoramic vista of the City and St Paul’s was probably taken from the southern tip of Southwark Bridge. In early days Queenhithe on the north bank of the Thames was a significant port for the landing of fish and corn. Its position above London Bridge - the successful docks were all in broader reaches down-river - led to its inevitable decline.
