More about this scene
The heart of the Square Mile. City life looks as frenetic as it does today. Job mobility was unheard of in the Victorian office. Only by staying with the same employer was there any hope of security and a modest pension. The best positions were with banks and insurance offices. Those keen to climb the career ladder avoided Law Chambers, which paid the meanest salaries.
