More about this scene
This gateway entrance to the City at the west end of Fleet Street was designed by Christopher Wren. The figures in the niches are James I and Charles I. The archway was removed in 1878 because of increased traffic, and it now stands in Hertfordshire (see image numbers 55213, C319024 and C319035, at Cheshunt). There are plans to return it to a site near St Paul's Cathedral.
