More about this scene
This ancient fortress has served as arsenal, prison and royal residence, and is comprised of an irregular mass of buildings erected at various periods down the centuries. It was begun by William Conqueror, and it is his keep, the White Tower, that still dominates the scene. The moat was drained in 1843 and sown with grasses and shrubs.
