More about this scene
Nelson’s column was not the first choice of monument to embellish Trafalgar Square - a Colonel Trench had proposed a great pyramid to dwarf St Paul’s. Of Portland stone, and 145 feet high, it was erected in 1843.The figure of Nelson was carved from three massive stones, the largest of which weighed thirty tons.
