More about this scene
The equestrian statue of Charles I on the left is the square's oldest statue; the king is looking towards the spot where he was executed in Whitehall in 1649. It stands on the site of the original Eleanor Cross, whcih commemorated the journey of Queen Eleanor's body from Lincoln in 1291. The original Charing Cross was also an Eleanor Cross - today's cross outside the station is a replica.
