More about this scene
The once flourishing herring fishery was already in decline at the time of this photograph. The trawlers have landed their catch, which is being cleaned, salted, packed and loaded into railway wagons. The large shop on the left is Tuttle's, the house furnisher's. The late Victorian terrace includes the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. On the right is the shingle mill, a vast screening plant, which was used to process shingle until 1958.
