Dancing In The 1950s/1960s

A Memory of Luton.

A Lutonian from birth, attended St Matthews Primary School and then Hitchin Road Sec Modern. A favourite past time of mine was dancing. I attended the Barratt School of Dancing in Gordon Street under the tutorship of Mr Gaddesdon. Old Time dancing, Scottish dancing and the Friday night dancing to the pop music the day. Have searched high and low and can find no reference to this dancing school. Also did old time dancing competitions at the old Waller Street Baths (in the winter) and the Cresta Ballroom in Alma Street. Then as one grew up we progressed to the Majestic Ballroom where we use see and dance to many of the new bands like Freddie and the Dreamers and all the others. Does anyone else remember these venues?

Christine i used to go to the majestic with my mates in 1963 and how all the character has been taken out of luton since then, i went to work at burgess minerals and then j.simpsons at round green, when i was growing up i remember the cresta and the george nearley opposite the savoy in george st, i was born in luton and see it when in its heyday all the factory's have gone and now my wife and i have just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversery and my wife is lutonian,
Hello K.murry, I also went to St. Matthews School in 1955/6. I lived in Reginald Street, loved the Majestic. Very keen on dancing. Loved chatting to Roger Daultry from the Who. I was a mod, not a rocker. My first address was in Wellington Street. My husband and I celebrate our Golden next year.
I was born in Luton in 1950, and have very happy memories of going to the Majestic Ballroom on Saturday mornings, with all the other young teens in 1963 or thereabouts. I used to have some great fun there. I am also interested if anybody out there was a member of the Air Cadets from late 1962 to 1965. I am now living in the Shropshire Area
