A Memory of Luton.

I got my first kiss from a boy called Peter Marshall at Saturday morning pictures here, we were playing kiss chase there. When I was about 6 or 7 there was a pig bin in the street where the neighbours used to put their food waste, to be collected. This was outside St. Paul's church hall, New Town Street, where I lived. My mum used to make toffee apples for all the kids. The rag man used to come round to collect any old clothes and jam jars, he'd give us a painting book in return. Early recycling. Those were the days.

i noticed the in your memory about the rag man the rag came to our street (Cades Close) and he was giving a gold fish in a polythene bag i ran upstairs and run after him with all my clothes i went home with fish in hand and no clothes mum went mad and draged me after the man who willing let me have my clothes back and keep the fish wonderfull days loved your memory
If my memory serves me correctly, the rag man had only one ear and his mouth was toward one side of his face. I think it was Mr. Hattle who used to go round the streets in the Hart Lane area shouting rag & bone, any old lumber, iron, rag and bone. he lived in 86 abbey Drive with his hoard of kids.
Pig bins brings back memories. I used to take our food waste to the (smelly) pig bin - chained to a tree in the street outside 16 Blenheim Crescent! I can't remember the smoke bins -can you?
