More about this scene
Lyme was granted its Royal Charter by Edward I in 1284, and it has remained popular as a resort. Whatever the state of the tide or the activity (or lack of it) within any harbour, there is invariably at least one bystander (here, in the left-hand middle ground) leaning over the rails watching the world happening - or failing to happen - around him, with plenty of time 'to stand and stare', as W H Davies' poem says.
